Troubleshooting Common Issues
Running into problems with AnimGifMoji? This guide covers the most common issues and how to fix them.
Conversion Issues
My converted emoji is blurry or pixelated
Cause: The source GIF is being heavily compressed to fit the platform's file-size limit.
Solutions:
- Use a shorter source GIF (fewer frames = less compression needed)
- Start with a source file closer to the target size (e.g., 128×128 px for Slack/Discord)
- Reduce the frame rate — 10-15 fps is ideal for emojis
- Use simpler animations with fewer colors
My converted emoji file is too large
Cause: The source GIF has too many frames, too high a resolution, or too many colors.
Solutions:
- Trim the animation to under 3 seconds
- Use a GIF with fewer colors (the GIF format supports up to 256 colors per frame)
- Try a source with smaller dimensions
- AnimGifMoji automatically compresses, but extremely complex GIFs may not compress enough
The animation doesn't loop
Cause: The source GIF's loop count is set to 1 (play once) instead of infinite.
Solution: Re-export your source GIF from your editing tool with "loop forever" enabled. AnimGifMoji preserves the original loop setting from the source file.
Colors look different after conversion
Cause: GIF compression uses color quantization, which reduces the number of colors to fit the 256-color-per-frame limit.
Solution: Start with a GIF that already uses a limited color palette. Flat, bold colors survive compression better than gradients.
Upload Issues
"Please upload a GIF or WebP file" error
Cause: The file format isn't supported.
What's supported: Only animated .gif and .webp files are accepted. JPEG, PNG, MP4, and other formats are not supported because AnimGifMoji is designed specifically for animated emojis.
File upload seems stuck or slow
Cause: Very large files take longer to read into the browser.
Solutions:
- Files over 10 MB may take a few seconds — wait for the progress indicator
- If it fails, try a smaller file or compress the source GIF first
- Check your internet connection — the file needs to transfer to your browser
Search Issues
GIF search returns no results
Cause: The search term may be too specific, or the API provider may be temporarily unavailable.
Solutions:
- Try broader search terms (e.g., "happy" instead of "happy birthday party celebration")
- Switch between Tenor and Giphy — they have different content libraries
- Check if the API status indicators on the homepage show "Connected"
Search results look different from what I expected
Cause: Tenor and Giphy index content differently and have different content libraries.
Solution: Try both providers. Tenor tends to have more meme-style content, while Giphy has a broader variety including stickers and clips.
Platform-Specific Issues
Slack: "Image too large" when uploading the emoji
Cause: The file exceeds Slack's 256 KB limit.
Solution: Re-convert using AnimGifMoji with "Slack" selected as the platform. The tool optimizes specifically for Slack's limits. If the source GIF is extremely complex, try a simpler source.
Discord: Animated emoji shows as static
Cause: Discord Nitro is required to use animated emojis in some contexts (like cross-server emoji use).
Solution: This is a Discord limitation, not an AnimGifMoji issue. The emoji will still animate in your own server and for Nitro users.
Teams: Can't find the custom emoji upload option
Solution: In a Teams chat, click the emoji/smiley icon at the bottom of the message box, then look for the + button or "Manage emojis" option. This feature requires Teams desktop or web — it may not be available on mobile.
Browser Issues
The converter doesn't load or shows a blank page
Solutions:
- Try a modern browser: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari (latest version)
- Disable ad blockers temporarily — they can sometimes block our image processing scripts
- Clear your browser cache and reload
- Check the browser console for errors (press F12 > Console tab)
Downloaded file won't open
Cause: Your browser may have renamed or corrupted the file during download.
Solution: Check that the file has the correct extension (.gif for most platforms, .webp for WhatsApp). Try downloading again.
Still Having Issues?
If none of the above solutions work, please submit feedback with:
- The platform you're targeting
- A description of the issue
- Your browser name and version
- If possible, a link to or description of the source GIF
We'll investigate and get back to you.
